SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer has dropped a major hint about who might replace Rassie Erasmus as Springboks head coach. While Erasmus has recently extended his contract until the 2031 Rugby World Cup in the USA, SA Rugby's CEO reveals a strategic shift in their coaching succession plan.
Oberholzer's comments suggest that the organization is moving away from the traditional four-year coaching cycle, where coaches like Jake White and Peter de Villiers were replaced after the World Cup. Instead, they want to reward coaches who produce results and keep them in place for longer periods.
This new approach implies that Erasmus' replacement could already be part of the Springboks coaching team. Mzwandile Stick and Deon Davids, who joined the coaching team in 2018, are considered strong candidates. However, the possibility of a foreign head coach is unlikely, as South Africa has never had one.
Duane Vermeulen, who joined SA Rugby's coaching structures soon after his retirement, is also in the running, despite having no head coaching experience. Oberholzer's statement indicates a stable future for both the men's and women's teams, with coaches in place until 2031, allowing for a smooth transition when Erasmus steps down.
