Ever wondered which nations truly prioritize their people and the planet? Former President Ram Nath Kovind recently unveiled the Responsible Nations Index (RNI) in Delhi, and the results are eye-opening. This groundbreaking index shifts the focus from a country's might or wealth to its responsibility – a refreshing perspective!
This isn't your typical ranking. The RNI evaluates 154 countries based on how responsibly they wield their power, considering three key areas: internal responsibility (how they treat their citizens), external responsibility (their role in the global community), and environmental responsibility (their care for the planet).
So, who's leading the charge? Singapore takes the top spot, followed by Switzerland, Denmark, and Cyprus. And where does India stand? India secures the 16th position, just above France. Pretty impressive, right?
But here's where it gets controversial... The United States finds itself at 66th place, even below Libya! Japan is ranked 38th. This really makes you think, doesn't it?
For a dose of reality, Pakistan is at 90th, while Afghanistan is at 145th. The index was a collaborative effort, developed by the World Intellectual Foundation, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai, and Jawaharlal Nehru University. They used data up to 2023 from trusted international sources like the World Bank and the United Nations.
As Ram Nath Kovind explained, the RNI redefines what makes a nation 'responsible'. It moves away from the traditional focus on economic and military strength to highlight how a country treats its own citizens. He emphasized the importance of internal responsibility, environmental accountability, and responsibility towards other nations.
