14,000+ New Public EV Charging Stations in the UK: Rapid Growth in 2025 (2026)

The UK's charging infrastructure is rapidly evolving, sparking a debate over terminology! Zapmap's 2025 report reveals a surge in charging stations, but how should we classify these?

Zapmap's terminology can be confusing: they use 'charge points' and 'charging devices' interchangeably, but there's a crucial difference. At electrive, we clarify that 'charging points' are individual connectors, while 'charging devices' are stations with multiple points. This distinction is vital as the industry evolves, ensuring we accurately track progress.

For clarity, let's focus on 'charging devices' as complete stations. By the end of 2025, Zapmap recorded a whopping 87,796 stations across Great Britain, located at 45,033 sites. These stations offer 116,052 EVSEs (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), with each EVSE potentially having multiple connectors, but not all usable at once. The total connector count reaches 122,071.

But here's where it gets controversial: Zapmap suggests that the number of EVSEs is a better indicator of charging accessibility than connectors. This shift in focus raises questions: Are we prioritizing quantity over quality?

The growth is most impressive in ultra-fast charging, with a 41% increase in stations capable of 150 kW or more. These 'ultra-rapid' stations now total 9,893. Stations with 50-149 kW, classified as 'rapid', also grew by 8% to 8,042. AC chargers, typically 9-49 kW, dominate with 69,861 units, a significant 18% rise.

And this is the part most people miss: The number of charging hubs, defined as sites with at least six rapid or ultra-rapid points, has skyrocketed by 39% to 748 hubs. This growth varies regionally, with the North West leading at over 35%, while the East of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland show a 29% increase.

Zapmap, the UK's top charge point mapping service, simplifies finding and navigating charging points. Their app also enables users to initiate and pay for charging sessions.

As the industry expands, should we standardize terminology to avoid confusion? Share your thoughts below!
